Water, exercise and skin wellness

By Denise Elliot

Where would we be without water? Actually no longer alive, dehydration causes death, due to the kidneys shutting down.

Chronic cellular dehydration, prematurely and painfully kills and is one of the most common causes of hospitalisation amongst the elderly over 65 years. Ironically our thirst diminishes as we age. Ideally a large amount of water needs to be within the cell (plump like a fat juicy plum, not dehydrated like a prune). However many contributing factors, including cell membrane function and structure means that as we age our cells do not retain water as well.

Without adequate water all major organ functions are negated, especially the liver and kidneys which are both vital to skin health. Water helps us detoxify efficiently, generates energy, and is also involved with gas exchange (oxygen).

For our skin to stay strong and age well, the strength and integrity of each cell membrane needs to be maintained. Water, quality omega 3 fatty acids, and fat soluble antioxidants are all vital and lessen the likelihood of infections, cellulitis and eliminative disorders, both through skin and other excretory pathways.

Exercise, like water intake, is important for optimal wellness. Movement warms the body and lessens the likelihood of blood clotting, lowers some inflammatory compounds and strongly supports the heart function with increased blood flow. Our blood (of which a large component is water) carries nutrients for cellular function and skin health.

The best food choices for skin health? Choose bright colours in our fruit/vege world (they are high in antioxidants) – and of course oily fish.
