Collagen

By Denise Elliot

Our skin strength is supported by our production of collagen, which is the primary protein involved in all of our connective tissue.

Different types of connective tissue are used in our arteries, veins, cartilage, tendons and bones. So collagen is important for almost all of our body.

Vitamin C is one of the key ingredients for collagen production. The flavonoids that naturally come with Vitamin C help support the actual cross linking of collagen fibres. Silica is also necessary for this process. We need all three of these ingredients to support the integrity and function of our skin.

During times of inflammation, enzymes break down the collagen, but flavonoids appear to inhibit this process. Blueberries, cherries and other dark berries provide the flavonoids that may help prevent collagen destruction. Flavonoids are found in nature in many highly coloured fruits and vegetables, and are often added to a Vitamin C supplement. They do support the action and antioxidant properties of the Vitamin C. Fruits tend to provide more flavonoids than most vegetables.

The collagen around our mouth is vital for good gum health and when strong, is more likely to ward off different oral bacteria. The collagen in our gum area has a high turn over, so constant nutritional care is needed. This does emphasize that a good quality multi vitamin and mineral supplement (especially one containing Vitamin C, silica and flavonoids), and antioxidants are of prime importance to our wellness.

Do not hesitate to seek professional help where necessary.
